Te Hapori Hōiho – National Māori Horse Association Aotearoa Trust brings awareness and further culturally validates Māori horsemen and women. We aim to consolidate the unique values of our Māori culture, and affirm our connection to the whenua, reo, whakapapa and whānau through our horses.

Te Hapori Hōiho is critical to our community in order to protect, revitalise and develop our mātauranga as a hapori. We also aim to develop and support more of our young talent to reach the upper levels of our sports, and extend our employment and business opportunities for our people via this kaupapa Māori.

Since 1814

Every Māori whānau has a horse story.

The first horses landed at Rangihoua Bay in 1814. Within a generation, acres of land and even a great war canoe were traded for a single horse.

What we do

Aims and objectives

Development

To foster and promote the further development of Te Reo and Tikanga Māori in relationship to Māori horse culture.

Opportunities

To advance the opportunities and standards of horsemanship and horse management by hosting events, wānanga, creating resources, linking whānau with expert knowledge and creating qualifications and programmes for sport development across all fields of horsemanship.

Connections

To foster connections between all whānau/families, iwi and other cultural groups that have an interest in Māori horse culture.

Employment

To promote opportunities for employment by supporting job creation via all forms of Māori equine activities.

Protection

To support the heritage interest, development and protection of different breeds of horses, both wild and domestic, and the fostering and dissemination of mātauranga Māori knowledge in respect of equine management, equine health and equine welfare.

Founding principles

The Trust has been established on the founding principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and with the following values: Mātauranga Māori, Whakawhanaungatanga, Manaakitanga, Kaitiakitanga, and Whakapapa.

Kia kokea ngā āheinga me ngā pae taumata o te eke hōiho. Ngā āheinga anō mō te whakatipu hōiho, ngā pākihi hōiho mō te whānau, hapu me ngā iwi huri noa i Aotearoa.
